Australia’s leading seniors organisation today welcomed the Commonwealth Government commitment of $27.25M to fund the Centre of Excellence in Population Ageing Research (CEPAR).
COTA Acting CE Judy Gregurke said the funding would assist CEPAR to continue and expand its multi-disciplinary research agenda into Australia’s ageing population.
“Like many western societies, the Australian population is ageing which offers a range of both challenges and opportunities for our policy makers,” Ms Gregurke said.
“Ensuring there is a solid evidence base through rigorous research will be crucial to Australia developing sustainable and workable policy into the future.
“Understanding what an older population really means for us as a nation, economically and socially will help policy makers understand how to create a fair and productive society where no age group is left behind.
“CEPAR is in an excellent position to undertake research both within and across academic disciplines and in many applied areas of real life.
“It can generate the sort of comprehensive, integrated, systemic evidence base that is urgently needed for effective ageing policy.
“COTA looks forward to continuing to work closely with CEPAR as it further develops its research agenda for the next seven years and beyond.”
