Mr Hugh Mackay AO is a well-known social researcher, social commentator, extensively published author, public speaker, experienced Board member in varied areas of interest, and an Australian icon. Hugh created The Mackay Report, a continuous program of qualitative social research, established in 1979. Quarterly reports were published for 25 years, until the project was purchased by Ipsos Australia in 2003 and renamed The Ipsos Mackay Report.
In the period 1979-2006 over 120 reports were published on such topics as community attitudes to politics, mass media, corporate ethics, shopping, marriage and the family, as well as studies of stages in the life-cycle, the national mood, etc. Hugh is the author of 12 published books on aspects of Australian life and culture, with his 13th in publication for release in May 2020. He is also the author of 7 works of fiction, with an eighth in publication for release in May 2020. He has also published widely in journals and book chapters and has written a number of newspaper columns over many years. He is the recipient of five Honorary Degrees and other awards, including an AO in 2015.
Hugh Mackay brings to the Board significant public stature, immense experience in social research, a deep understanding of the Australian population overall and by segment, and a keen interest in our work based on his lived experience.
