Leading seniors advocate, COTA Australia, is inviting older Australians, family carers and home care package providers to offer feedback on the state of self-management in the home care system.
In October and November, COTA will be hosting a series of consultations in Melbourne, Sydney, Hobart and Adelaide to glean first hand insights into self management in home care packages, namely, the tasks and activities required to successfully self-manage; and the training and development required for staff, consumers and carers.
Chief Executive of COTA Australia, Ian Yates, said, “hearing the voices of older Australians, their carers and aged care providers is absolutely imperative in developing proposals to enhance choice and control within the home-care system.
“These consultations are a timely opportunity for people with lived experiences in home-care to share their thoughts on self-management, identify information gaps and workshop the training and development required to support self-managed home care.
The ‘Increasing Self-management in Home Care’ Project will seek to offer home care package consumers, and/or a consumer’s family member or carer, the option to become more involved in the day-to-day planning and management of their services.
To coincide with the consultations, COTA has released a nation-wide survey for older Australians, carers and aged care providers to complete.
Participants in the survey also have the chance to be in the running to win an iPad by sharing in 50 words or less why they think increasing self-management of home care packages is important to choice and control in aged care services.
Feedback from the consultations and survey will inform the development of Self-Management Toolkits for approved home care providers and their staff, and for consumers and carers who participate in the project’s Home Care Package Self-management trial in 2018.
