Policy Forum 2017

Policy Forum 2017

AAA Housing for Older Australians – making it Affordable, Accessible and Appropriate

When: Thursday 22 June 2017
Time: 9.00am to 5.00pm
Where: National Press Club, Canberra

Housing security is a basic human need and human right.

At this year’s COTA National Policy Forum we place the spotlight on what housing means in later life and explore current policy issues and future trends around housing for older Australians.

The Forum will bring together an exciting line-up of policy makers, academics, consumers, advocates and others to discuss some of the pressing housing issues of our time and how they affect older people.

What does the crisis in housing affordability and availability mean for current and future groups of older people? How would the range of potential policy responses to this crisis impact on older people? What do older people need and want in their housing? What kinds of housing supports wellbeing in later life? What are the key challenges facing older renters? Why are there increasing rates of homelessness amongst older people and how can this be turned around? Should the home be viewed as a financial asset to be leveraged to help fund retirement years?

The Forum will also explore the assumption of outright home ownership in later life that is at the heart of many of the most crucial public policies affecting the lives of older people – pension levels, superannuation and aged care. With home ownership declining and people increasingly going into older age still carrying a mortgage or as lifelong renters, what does this mean for these policy settings and will they need to change?
